The Tarot Garden

A colorful and imaginative world unfolds before visitors at the Tarot Garden, located in the town of Capalbio.

Twenty-two surreal and vibrantly colored sculptures rise toward the sky—some so large that you can explore them from the inside.

Inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s Parc Güell in Barcelona and the ceramic works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) created her ideal park here. It was a place that reflected her vision of life and, at the same time, was intended to encourage visitors to reflect on human nature.

“Life is like a card game: we’re born without knowing the rules, but everyone has to play the hand they’ve been dealt.”
– Niki de Saint Phalle

The sculptures, covered in mosaics, mirrors, and stained glass, depict the 22 cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot—from The Fool to The Empress. In stark contrast to the sinuous and monumental forms of Niki’s works are the thin-metal sculptures by Jean Tinguely, her husband, who collaborated on the creation of the garden before his death, which occurred a few years before the project’s completion.
