Ponte Vecchio
The Ponte Vecchio is a spectacular structure; it is not only the oldest bridge in Florence, but also one of the oldest segmental arch bridges in the world.
Measuring over 80 meters in length, it spans the Arno River and offers visitors a breathtaking view of the city.
The Ponte Vecchio once housed blacksmiths, tanners, and butchers. Today, the picturesque little shops on the bridge are home to jewelry stores and art galleries, perfect for admiring during a stroll.
From an older version to a newer one
It is said that during the Roman era there was an original wooden bridge, which was destroyed by a flood in 1333. Within a few years, the current stone bridge with its three arches was built and inaugurated in 1345. The name of the architect who designed this historic structure remains unknown.
