Poggibonsi Archaeological Park

Hut, longhouse, fortress: history comes to life in Poggibonsi.

Those with a passion for historical architecture and daily life in the Middle Ages will find Poggibonsi an ideal destination. On the hill of Poggio Imperiale, you can visit a reconstructed village dating back to the time of Charlemagne and a restored fortress linked to the Medici dynasty.

The Archeodromo, Italy’s first open-air museum entirely dedicated to the Middle Ages, faithfully reconstructs typical 9th- and 10th-century buildings. It is located near the archaeological site where evidence of the Frankish presence in the Tuscan hills was discovered. The main structure is a longhouse, flanked by various smaller buildings that illustrate the rural architecture of the period. During opening hours, the village comes to life: families in medieval costumes reenact scenes of daily life and craft activities from the era. Visitors can also explore the interiors of the huts, offering an immersive experience.

History you can touch

Also open to the public is the Fortress of Poggio Imperiale, commissioned in 1492 by Lorenzo the Magnificent with the aim of strengthening Medici control over southern Tuscany. With the decline of the Medici’s power in the early 16th century, construction was halted. Today, the restored walls offer visitors the chance to explore the defensive structure and visit a small museum inside. Five themed trails wind through the hill’s park, enhanced by informational panels dedicated to archaeology, architecture, geography, natural sciences, and local history, offering a comprehensive experience blending nature and culture.
