Piazza Grande Montepulciano

Piazza Grande is located at the highest point of Montepulciano’s historic center and is surrounded by imposing buildings.

The square is considered the heart of the picturesque medieval town and captivates visitors with its unmistakable Tuscan atmosphere.

There are numerous attractions to visit right next to Piazza Grande. Particularly noteworthy is the imposing Town Hall, whose tower offers a spectacular view of the surrounding hilly landscape. Montepulciano Cathedral is located on the south side of the square: the interior of the cathedral is characterized by an elegant style and houses, among other things, a three-part artwork dating back to 1401, which is located above the main altar.

In the realm of vampires

Montepulciano served as the filming location for the second installment of the famous Twilight saga, “New Moon.” While the novel is set in Volterra, the film production team chose to shoot in the historic center of Montepulciano. Scenes were filmed in the Town Hall and in the town’s winding alleys. The film’s most famous scene, in which the young Bella saves the vampire Edward’s life, was filmed right in Piazza Grande.

In the realm of vampires

In the summer, Piazza Grande becomes a stage for a variety of events. In addition to theater performances and concerts, the traditional “Bravio delle Botti” also draws large crowds: in this race, participants roll heavy wine barrels up the city’s steep alleys to Piazza Grande.
