Piazza del Campo is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and delights and captivates visitors from all over the world with its medieval buildings.
Viewed from above, Piazza del Campo resembles the shape of a shell. This feature is due to its semicircular layout, divided into nine segments that symbolize the Nine Lords, the oligarchic government that ruled Siena between the 13th and 14th centuries. The square is framed by some of the city’s most important buildings, such as the Palazzo Pubblico, which houses the City Museum, and the nearby Torre del Mangia, which offers a breathtaking view of the city. The square is also graced by the Fonte Gaia, a richly decorated marble fountain.
A one-of-a-kind event: the Palio di Siena
Although the square is often bustling with activity, twice a year it draws a particularly large crowd: on July 2 and August 16, it transforms into a racetrack and hosts the Palio di Siena, a race steeped in tradition. Ten of Siena’s 17 districts are represented by a rider and compete in an exciting three-lap race around the square.
