Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Regional Park
Vast pine forests, picturesque marshes, and pristine beaches: the Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Nature Park is remarkable for its biological diversity.
It has been preserved despite its proximity to Tuscany’s major cities. The landscape can be explored with or without a guide in various ways, such as on foot, by bicycle, on an eco-railway, or by boat.
Covering an area of approximately 24,000 hectares, the protected area stretches along a wide, undeveloped coastal strip between Viareggio, Pisa, and Livorno. The regional park has been protecting the unique flora and fauna of this urban fringe since 1979. At the heart of the park lies the Tenuta di San Rossore, the largest pine forest in Europe.
Home to numerous plant and animal species
In the natural paradise of the Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Park, you can discover rare plant species such as the carnivorous Drosera, the Greek Periploca, the marsh orchid, and the paniculate knapweed, which is typical of coastal dunes. While walking or strolling through the woods, you may be lucky enough to spot red foxes and fallow deer in their natural habitat. In areas where marshes suddenly emerge, wading birds and herons find refuge.
