Historic Center of Pienza

In the Val d’Orcia, between Montepulciano and Montalcino, there is a real gem waiting for visitors:

The town of Pienza, which was redesigned in the 15th century based on the ideals of a “Renaissance ideal city.” Pienza delights visitors with its imposing buildings, romantic alleyways, picturesque squares, and stunning viewpoints. Its historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The city’s redesign dates back to Pope Pius II, who in 1459, shortly after taking office, ordered the reconstruction of his hometown according to Renaissance plans and renamed it Pienza, which means “City of Pius.”

In the heart of the ideal city

Visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Pienza as they stroll through the historic center. Of particular note is Piazza Pio II, home to the most important monuments of the World Heritage Site, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Piccolomini, and Palazzo Borgia.
