Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve

Between Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto lies a valuable biodiversity treasure: the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve.

Where at the time of the Etruscans, who settled in central Italy between the 8th and 1st centuries BC, part of the large Lake Prile was located, today the landscape is characterized by marshes, canals and open water areas. A museum in the historic Casa Rossa Ximenes provides on-site information on the history and ecology of the area.

The vast wetlands are an important habitat for about 200 different animal species, including flamingos, red and white ponds, jays, porcupines, foxes and hedgehogs, which can be observed from special platforms. Photographers, therefore, love to visit Diaccia Botrona as much as those who are seeking peace and tranquility and appreciate the quiet splendor of nature. At any time of year, the changing colors of the vegetation, along with the play of light and water, create a picturesque setting.

There is only one trail in the entire nature reserve (Trail No. 31). It is 15 kilometers long and can be used and walked for free.

Museum and guided tours

In the center of the area is an impressive building, built in the 18th century by mathematician Leonardo Ximenes as a lock. The so-called Ximenes Red House was used to regulate water levels. Today it houses a multimedia exhibition: video documentaries and a relief model provide interesting information about the nature of the area and local flora and fauna. A special attraction is the bird flight simulator, which allows museum visitors to discover the area from above. Guided tours and boat trips are also offered.
