Cathedral of San Lorenzo Grosseto
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, also known as the Grosseto Cathedral
It is the main religious building in the capital of the Maremma region and captivates visitors with its harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. Anyone strolling through the historic center cannot help but notice this majestic sacred building, located between Piazza Dante and Piazza del Duomo.
Construction of the cathedral began in the late 13th century, but over the centuries the building underwent numerous restorations and alterations. The façade, with its alternating bands of white and red marble, for example, dates back to the 19th century. The western part of the building is distinguished by its three portals, surmounted by a walkable arcaded loggia and an imposing rose window. The south side, facing Piazza Dante, has remained largely intact: here you can admire a portal decorated with sculptures and symbolic motifs, a large frescoed sundial, and a statue of Saint Lawrence, the cathedral’s patron saint.
Simple, yet impressive
Inside, the light filtering through the windows creates an almost mystical atmosphere. The nave, simple yet evocative, is punctuated by tall fluted columns and pointed arches that draw the eye upward. Among the most significant elements are the elegant, finely carved pulpit and the altarpieces and frescoes depicting episodes from the life of Saint Lawrence. For those wishing to learn more about the history and details of the cathedral, audio guides in Italian and English are available on site.
