Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore
In the heart of the Tuscan landscape of the Crete Senesi—amid vineyards, olive groves, and badlands—the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore stands majestically on a ridge, a monastic complex of extraordinary beauty. For over 700 years, Olivetan Benedictine monks have lived, prayed, and worked here.
The 35 large frescoes decorating the cloister depict the life of Saint Benedict, who lived in the 6th century and is considered the father of Western monasticism. The frescoes were painted by two great artists: Luca Signorelli (c. 1450–1523) and Sodoma (c. 1477–1549). The cloister is the heart of the monastery and leads to the other rooms: the church, the library, the refectory, and the museum of sacred art, which houses works from various periods.
Benedictine hospitality
In keeping with the Benedictine tradition of hospitality dating back over a thousand years, the abbey welcomes everyone. Visitors may explore the abbey on their own, with an audio guide, or by joining a guided tour. Visitors can attend the Masses celebrated regularly and let themselves be carried away by the timeless charm of Gregorian chant. In the monastery shop, you can purchase handmade products: herbal teas, natural ointments, liqueurs, and other specialties made by the monks.
